At the end of April 2018, with the Windows 10 build 1803 (Spring Creators Update), Windows users have the opportunity to use a new clean up Windows 10 tool to get more disk space on their computers.
Since Windows already has a similar tool called “Disk Cleanup Utility” to help users free up space on their machines, let’s take a look at how the new Windows 10 disk cleanup solution works and how it benefits us.
How do I find the "Free up space now" utility?
This tool is part of the Settings app, so you can find it there.
First you need to open “Settings”. We offer you 2 ways:
- Press the Win + R keys simultaneously and enter “ms-settings:” in the window that opens. Press OK or Enter and you will see the “Settings” window.
- Right click on “Start” and you will see a list. Find “Settings” there and click to open.
Now we can move on.
In the “Settings” window, click on “System” and on the left side of the window go to “Storage”. In the “Storage sense” section you will find “Free up space now”.
If you do not see this option, it means that you have not yet installed the update on your computer and your Windows version is lower than Windows 10 build 1803. Thus, the disk cleanup Windows 10 utility is not available to you.
How does Free up space now work?
This tool scans the data on your disk and finds those that are no longer needed and can be deleted to free up space on your computer.
The Microsoft clean up utility scans temporary files and data that can be deleted, but your computer and system will continue to function properly without them.
You can see at a glance how much space each data type takes up and how much space you can free up if you select multiple items to delete them.
The Recycle Bin will also be scanned. So, if you want to recover something from deleted files, then you need to do this before checking the option to clear the Recycle Bin.
If your computer sometimes has problems, we recommend that you do not delete “System created Windows Error Reporting Files” and “Windows upgrade log files” using the disk cleanup Windows 10 tool.
Previous Windows installation (s), however, can be removed if you are not going to downgrade to a previous version of Windows. In any case, Windows will automatically delete these files 10 days after the update.
Also among the objects that can be removed, you will find files such as Thumbnails, Windows Defender Antivirus, Delivery Optimization Files, Temporary Internet Files, Device Driver Files, and others.
When you have selected all the files you want to remove, click the “Remove files” button at the top and they will be removed.
The larger the size of the selected files, the longer it may take to delete.
“Free up space now” is a pretty handy utility with a user-friendly interface that will help you free up disk space and clean Windows 10 (clean up Windows 10) in just a few clicks.
Also, the advantage of this tool is that it scans not only user files, but also system files, which can also take up a lot of space on the computer.
This way, you can regularly free up space on your computer without wasting a lot of time and effort just using Microsoft cleanup utilities.
